FAQ: Voyage Questions, Unpacked

Composed answers to the questions planners ask most often at the chart table.

Which sailing area suits a first yacht holiday?

Grounds with short distances, good shelter and plenty of harbours are the most forgiving. The Ionian Islands around Lefkada and the British Virgin Islands are frequently recommended for this reason. Central Dalmatia also works well outside peak season. See Coastlines.

Do I need a licence to charter a yacht?

For bareboat charter, usually yes. Common evidence includes the RYA Day Skipper, the International Certificate of Competence or ASA bareboat certification. Croatia additionally requires a VHF certificate aboard. Confirm with the charter company and national authority. Without qualifications, a skippered charter is the usual route.

When is the Mediterranean sailing season?

Broadly May to October. June and September are often considered the best balance of warm water, steadier winds and quieter harbours. July and August are busiest, and in the Aegean they coincide with the strongest meltemi.

How far should we sail each day?

For a relaxed week, many skippers plan around 15–25 nautical miles a day, or three to five hours under way. Keep the first and last days short. See Routes.

Is a catamaran better than a monohull?

Neither is better in general. Catamarans offer space and stability at anchor; monohulls tend to sail closer to the wind and are cheaper to berth. The choice depends on your crew and coast.

What about seasickness?

Sheltered areas with short passages reduce exposure. Staying on deck, watching the horizon and keeping hydrated help many people. Speak to a pharmacist or doctor about remedies before travel.

Are yacht holidays suitable for children?

Many families sail with children. Well-fitted lifejackets, clear rules on deck, short passages and plenty of swim stops make a big difference. A catamaran’s flat deck can be reassuring.

Can I sail the Caribbean during hurricane season?

The official Atlantic season runs 1 June to 30 November. Some people do sail then, but insurance terms, charter policies and risk tolerance all need careful thought. Many planners prefer December to May.

Can we anchor anywhere?

No. National parks such as Kornati and La Maddalena have their own rules, and the Balearic Islands restrict anchoring over protected Posidonia seagrass. Always check local regulations.

Does this site arrange charters?

No. Jollyjinxsparksp is an independent reading resource. We do not sell, book or recommend specific charter operators. See The Atlas.
